What we would like to do
- Secure the low water bridge in Umgazi road and replacing the fencing that has been broken.
- Sand and paint the palisade fences in the immediate area.
- Repaint the pedestrian bridge between Capel Lodge and Fleur de Lys.
- Erect poles on the bridge to prohibit motorcycles from using it for deliveries.
- Monthly clean-up of the Waterkloof and Wolwespruit rivers to remove litter and blockages to improve the flow. The community will be encouraged to participate in the monthly clean up.
- Place benches in areas of the greenbelt for beautification purposes.
- Paths to be created to encourage the residents in the area to walk or cycle through the park. Paths will be created as not to disturb the natural habitat.

Why are we doing this?
The Hazelwood Park is part of the confluence of the Waterkloof and Wolwespruit rivers. Increasingly, vagrants have moved into the area with visible drug dealing and other criminal activity increasing. The local residents are increasingly fearful of walking near the area. Waste pickers have also set up in the area leading to litter and other degradation of the natural environment.
The caretakers of the area around Tugela Park including Tugela Park, Capelle Lodge, Fleur de Lys have been working informally with labour provided from each complex to secure and clear the Tugela Park of alien vegetation, rocks etc and repair broken fences to keep vagrants out of the park. The effort has been supported with additional resources from the New Hope School and the Menlyn Boutique Hotel .
The group would like to formalise and legalise their effort through the Community Upliftment Program. A non-profit company, Friends of Tugela has been registered for this purpose.
